During the ground-breaking ceremony at Bukungu Landing Site, State Minister for Transport Fred Byamukama said the ferries are meant to support the economic activities in the areas after their completion in 2023.
The two ferries under construction (Bukungu-Kagwara-Kaberamaido, BBK) will cost Shs. 41bn Ugandan Shillings and will facilitate trade and development of districts within their destination routes by encouraging both local and foreign investors.
This will ensure affordable transport for residents within three districts of Buyende, Kaberamaido and Serere where transport costs have been high making movement of people with their goods inevitable.
Each ferry will consist of three decks with a minimum capacity of 310 passengers, 14 small cars and 50-tonne trucks in a single route, sheltered sitting areas, rest rooms, washrooms, adequate life jackets and a rescue boat.
Ferries are part of the pledges made by President Museveni since 2000 and have steadily taken shape.
